Challenge
The principles of this business were looking to sell the business in approximately three years.  
They wanted to increase the value of the company so that they could maximize the sales
price.  The company had not engaged in formal strategic planning in over five years.  They had
been successful, but were looking to ramp up growth to position the business for sale.

Solution
Dyer Consulting Group worked with the company to develop a detailed strategic plan using
DCG’s 4-Phase Strategy Model.  This process helped management understand the strengths and
weaknesses of the company and how to improve the future value of the company. The
resulting Action Plan called for an expansion of the high-margin laser processing business, the
hiring of a full-time sales representative, more activity at relevant Trade Shows and increased
use of direct calling and mail.  Comprehensive financial budgets and projections were created
for the company.  With DCG’s assistance, the company also applied for a line of credit from a
local bank so that they could offer more generous deposit requirements for their customers,
mainly to new Chinese customers that they were targeting, but were unable to secure
because of the current deposit requirements.

Results
The strategic planning session that was facilitated by DCG left everyone with a better
understanding of the business and its potential.  During the first full quarter after the plan was
implemented, the company's laser processing and repair business revenues increased 29% YOY.  
With their approved line of credit, the company was able to market their custom laser systems
more aggressively.  They received orders for two custom laser systems in Q1 2008 (the company
usually builds 2-3 systems in the entire year).  Both of the orders came from the burgeoning
Chinese market.
