When the race of Men awoke, Morgoth (or his servant, depending on the text consulted) temporarily left Angband to live among them. Morgoth pursues what is quite literally a scorched earth policy. What happened? Originally known as Melkor, Morgoth is essentially the Lucifer of Tolkien's story. Because Morgoth was the most powerful being in Arda, many "flocked to his banner". Morgoth's chief servants were Maiar he corrupted or monsters he created: Sauron, later the Dark Lord of Mordor and his chief servant; the Balrogs, including Gothmog, the Lord of Balrogs and High-Captain of Angband; Glaurung, the Father of Dragons; Ancalagon "the Black", the first and greatest of the Winged Fire-Dragons; Carcharoth, the mightiest wolf that ever lived; Draugluin, the Sire of Werewolves; and Thuringwethil, Sauron's vampire messenger. The most powerful of them were called the Valar, or Powers of the World; the lesser, who acted as their followers and assistants, were the Maiar. If you are easily offended or of a Liberal persuasion this is not the place for you. Fëanor and most of the Noldor pursued him, along the way slaying their kin the Teleri and incurring the Doom of Mandos. Much of the text published in The Silmarillion was drawn from earlier, more completely written, drafts of the mythology—and thus reflects the older conception of Morgoth's power; there is less discussion of his marring all of Arda by diluting himself throughout it. Morgoth was the principal agent of evil during the time of The Silmarillion, and his influence lingers in the world even after he was cast from the world into the outer void. He was reduced to Morgoth, the "Dark Enemy" (poetically elaborated as "The Black Foe of the World"). After the Creation, many Ainur entered into Eä. Melkor re-entered Arda and attacked and destroyed the Two Lamps, which at the time were the only sources of light, along with the Valarian land of Almaren, which was wiped from existence. He shared a part of the powers of every other Vala, but unlike them used it for domination of the whole of Arda. Morgoth … His evil remained, however, as "Arda Marred," and his will influenced all living creatures. He had spread his power and malice too thin, and had weakened himself too much to fight back; he escaped only through the arrival of the Balrogs. What happened in this battle: Fëanor was killed by Morgoth's Balrogs. A few had beaks like a squid, which was one reason why some descriptions were inconsistent. F. A. We hope that as further information surfaces, the true history of what happened can come to light, mysteries will be revealed, and we, humanity, can further progress in our search for where we came from. Morgoth, meaning "Black Enemy," or "Black Foe of the World," as named by Fëanor and the other Eldar, whose real name is Melkor, meaning "He who arises in might," is the primary antagonist of The Silmarillion, and the lord and master of, and predecessor to, Sauron, who, in turn, is the eponymous primary antagonist of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It would be either by Túrin Turambar or by Eönwë (as mentioned in the Hiding of Valinor) that Morgoth would be slain. In this more complete version of a story summarized in Quenta Silmarillion, Húrin and his younger brother Huor were leaders of the House of Hador, one of the three kindred of elf-friends. As part of these efforts, he drew many weaker-willed Ainur to him, creating a counter to Eru's main theme. [T 19][T 20] Similarly the Old English translations devised by Tolkien differ in sense: Melko is rendered as Orgel ("Pride") and Morgoth as Sweart-ós ("Black God"). Morgoth summoned many Men to his side during the fifty-year conflict, which became the largest, longest, and bloodiest conflict ever fought in Arda's history. His hands were burned by the theft of the Silmarils, from which they never healed, and he carried evermore the burden of burning pain. This, however, required the Flame Imperishable, the Secret Fire, which belonged to Eru alone; though Melkor searched for this, he could not find it. Sauron would continue to spread Morgoth's teachings after his defeat, and ultimately became the new Dark Lord in the Second and Third Ages, but Morgoth himself would never return. Fëanor rallied all the elves of his tribe, the Ñoldor, and swore an oath that they would establish their own kingdoms in Middle-earth, defeat Morgoth and take back the Silmarils. [1] Also, just as in Christian tradition Satan leads humanity to become slaves of sin, Melkor creates an "iron hell" for his elven slave labourers. [T 16] But his power increased in later revisions of the story until he became the most powerful Ainu,[T 17] and in a late essay more powerful than all of the Valar combined. What this is a mess up on Morgoth's part: despite Fëanor hating Morgoth, he is actually the one (unwittingly) carrying out Morgoth's will, sowing discord and hating basically everyone. Now look at this place, lucky to see a new journal every few months. After Morgoth's defeat, his lieutenant Sauron gradually rallied many of Morgoth's servants to his own cause, and during the Second Age established himself in the land of Mordor. He also wielded a black spear, and in early texts, a poison sword. Lieutenant of Morgoth. Craig first began contributing to Screen Rant in 2016, several years after graduating college, and has been ranting ever since, mostly to himself in a darkened room. As they did when the elves were first born, the Valar came to Middle-earth and defeated their brother, but this time Morgoth was cast into a void outside of existence, where he remains thereafter. Adding to the confusion, they had legs like a lobst… In the latter versions, Melkor also dispersed agents throughout Arda, digging deep into the earth and constructing great pits and fortresses, as Arda was marred by darkness and rivers of fire. They immediately set about the ordering of the universe and Arda within it, according to the themes of Eru as best they understood them. These forces of darkness included Balrogs and other primordial spirits who had been corrupted by Morgoth's will, of which Sauron was one, serving as his most trusted commander. Tolkien likened the War of Wrath that ended the First Age to the Norse Ragnarök. If you are easily offended or of a Liberal persuasion this is not the place for you. When the host of the Valar came for him there is no mention of him even putting up a fight. Her husband Eärendil, wearing the Silmaril on his brow, sailed across the sea to Valinor, where he pleaded with the Valar to liberate Middle-earth from Morgoth. Here he became one of the Maiar of Aulë, and was known as Mairon. Morgoth's example provided later ages a cautionary tale against pride, wrath, envy, lust for power, and greed — and the destruction these visit upon oneself and others. The few remaining dragons were scattered, and the handful of surviving Balrogs hid themselves deep within the earth. He is the main antagonist of The Silmarillion, The Children of Húrin, and The Fall of Gondolin, and is mentioned briefly in The Lord of the Rings. Like Lucifer, he rebels against his creator. [T 8], Melkor's inability to perform true creation is tied to the idea that something of his actual being must pass into the things he "created", in order to give them an effective substance and reality. [T 7], Before the creation of Eä and Arda (The Universe and the World), Melkor was the most powerful of the Ainur, the "angelic beings" created by Eru Ilúvatar (analogous to God). In the early versions of Tolkien's stories, Melkor/Morgoth was not seen as the most powerful Ainu. Melkor's thematic variations in that Music amounted to his own self-elaboration. At the beginning of Time, he was amongst the Ainur who entered into Eä. According to this prophecy Morgoth would regain his power and find a way to break through the Door of Night. His fortress Utumno dispersed deathly cold throughout Arda and brought on an endless winter in the north; for the sake of the Elves, the Valar waged a seven-year war with Melkor, defeating him after laying a grievous siege to Utumno. [T 8] At the time he destroyed the Two Trees and stole the Silmarils, he took to himself the shape of a great "Dark Lord, tall and terrible". [T 8], During the Great Music of the Ainur, Melkor attempted to alter the Music and introduced what he believed to be elements purely of his own design. However much power Morgoth may natively have had, it was definitely finite. At the end of this battle, Thorondor, the great Eagle, swooped down and scarred Morgoth's face with his talons, a wound that also never healed. [T 22]. Unlike his fellow Ainu Aulë, Melkor was too proud to admit that his creations were simply discoveries made possible entirely by Eru. Morgoth's armies are powerful, but ultimately they can't overcome the host from the Blessed Realm, and the good guys finally, at long last, come out on top. After the fall of the Lamps, the Valar withdrew into the land of Aman in the far West. On arriving in Beleriand, the region of Middle-earth nearest Angband, the Noldor established kingdoms and made war on Morgoth. He may command powerful followers such as Saruman and the Witch-king, but it's Mordor's big, fiery eye in the sky causing trouble in the Third Age when Frodo's story is set. The country where they settled was called Valinor, which they heavily fortified. morgothsreview.com If you'd like to chip in and help me out: ht… Morgoth doesn't seem to like Michael Jackson who died tragically in 2009. The major battles of the ensuing war included the Dagor-nuin-Giliath (Battle Under the Stars, fought before the first rising of the Moon), Dagor Aglareb (Glorious Battle), Dagor Bragollach (Battle of Sudden Flame) at which the long-standing Siege of Angband was broken, and the battle of Nírnaeth Arnoediad (Unnumbered Tears) when the armies of the Noldor and the Men allied with them were routed and the men of the East joined Morgoth. Morgoth's Review offers a Non Politically Correct spin on news, politics and popular culture. The sorcerer called Morgoth the Terrible walked Eternia during the time of the Ancients. 3,827 talking about this. He is described as being equal in power to Manwë, chief of the Valar in Arda. The name given by Fëanor (Morgoth) was present from the first stories. Who was Morgoth in The Lord of the Rings, and what became of him during the era of Sauron, Frodo and the One Ring? Melkor's powers were originally immense, greater than those of any other single Ainu. "His desire to create other beings for his glory" turns into a desire for servants and slaves to follow his own will. [4], This article is about the fictional character. For his third trick, Morgoth stole the elves' Silmarils, precious jewels coveted above all else, and this act of theft lit a fire among the entire elvish race. [T 5][T 4] This too is an epithet since he, like all the Ainur, had another true name in Valarin (in the legendarium, the language of the Ainur before the beginning of Time), but this name was not recorded. He developed from a standout among equals into a being so powerful that the other created beings could not utterly defeat him. To accomplish this Morgoth dispersed his being throughout Arda, tainting its very fabric, and only Aman was free of it. He rebuilt it, and raised above it the volcanic triple peak of Thangorodrim. In other sections, such as the 1950s draft used for Ainulindalë, the implication of his pervasive power remains clear. Q: What Happened To the Folk of Bór after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad? [T 15] Since he could never fully dominate Men, he could never really trust them, and therefore feared them. Morgoth fled into the deepest pit and begged for pardon, but his feet were cut from under him, his crown was made into a collar, and he was chained once again with Angainor. Melkor, dissatisfied that Eru had abandoned the Void, had sought to emulate his creator and fill the Void with sentient beings. Arda never seemed to achieve a stable form until the Vala Tulkas entered Eä and tipped the balance. [T 8] Tolkien elaborates on this in Morgoth's Ring, drawing an analogy between the One Ring, into which Sauron committed much of his power, and all of Arda—"Morgoth's Ring"—which contains and is corrupted by the residue of Melkor's power until the Remaking of the World (analogous to the Apocalypse). He became a giant—immortal—with terrible powers. Just as Sauron later held a fortress in Mordor, Morgoth established the stronghold of Utumno in the far north of Middle-earth. Morgoth's spirit was cast out beyond the Walls of Night, yet his presence remains as the pervasive corruption of the world, "even until the End of Days". (Each Ainu arose from a divine theme, existing beforehand only in the mind of Eru.) Henceforth it will be Anfauglith, the Gasping Dust, a lifeless wasteland. Although we have relatively few details about what happened we know that all the major strongholds held by Morgoth’s forces were taken or destroyed. That is a period of 42 years. [T 23], Melkor has been interpreted as being analogous to Satan. [T 23], Morgoth, once the most powerful being in Eä, spent his will on his vast armies and followers, so that in the War of Wrath, as his armies were swept away before the host of Aman, he was captured by Eönwë and cast off his throne. But his creativity becomes destructive because it had always been tainted with pride. Just as Morgoth had commenced his endgame, Thanos could now launch his own. Masquerading as a friend, Morgoth bred division among the elves residing in Valinor - a chasm that would rumble on for generations. This, however, required the Flame Imperishable, the Secret Fire, which belonged to Eru alone; though Melkor searched for this, he could not find it. Soon afterwards, the Sun and the Moon arose for the first time, and Men awoke if they had not done so already. Morgoth broke the siege in the Dagor Bragollach, or the Battle of Sudden Flame. German death metal veterans MORGOTH have officially called it quits. [T 3], Like Sauron, he had a host of other titles: Lord of the Dark, the Dark Power of the North, the Black Hand, and Great Enemy. Their first dwelling was in Utumno, but after their master's defeat during the War for Sake of the Elves, the Balrogs and other creatures in Melkor's service escaped and went to Angband. More: Lord of the Rings: Every Character Confirmed For Amazon's TV Show. Melkor was created by Eru Iluvatar in the Timeless Halls, at the beginning of creation. [T 3], "Morgoth Bauglir" is thus an epithet. In their heart burned some of the Light of Valinor from the Two Trees. Melkor and his followers entered Eä as well, but he was frustrated that his colleagues would not recognize him as leader of the new realm, despite his having a greater share of knowledge and power than all the rest. Just look at this journal, I remember when there used to be a new post every day on this journal. In unpublished writings, Tolkien suggested that Morgoth was destined to one day return, breaking free from his prison of nothingness, but this has never been canonized in The Lord of the Rings. Pity was beyond Morgoth's understanding, as was courage. Melkor could not create anything, as he did not possess the Flame Imperishable; thus he could only create a mockery of those things in Arda. Underestimating the extent of his scheming, the Valar pardoned Morgoth, and he repaid them with one of the greatest acts of evil Middle-earth would ever see. [T 3] Bauglir is also Sindarin, meaning "Tyrant" or "Oppressor". Related: Why Frodo Had To Leave Middle-earth At The End Of Lord Of The Rings. [T 21] Morgoth is once given a particular sphere of interest: in the early Tale of Turambar Tinwelint (precursor of Thingol) names him "the Vala of Iron". Click the button below to start this article in quick view. Tolkien vacillated over the Sindarin equivalent of this, which appeared as Belcha, Melegor, and Moeleg. When the Valar became aware of this they sent Tulkas to arrest him, but Melkor had already fled. The next required pinpointing the highest concentration of that energy. Sauron became Morgoth's capable servant, helping him in all the "deceits of his cunning". What makes it morely likely that this just refers to … This last version illustrates the idea of Morgoth dispersing himself into the world he marred. Sauron is widely known as the main villain of The Lord of the Rings, but before him, Middle-earth was tormented by a more terrible villain, Morgoth. Then, conspiring with the spider-like Ungoliant, Morgoth extinguished the light of the world and fled to Middle-earth to reassemble his forces and wage war. Time surely flies! Driven out by Tulkas, Melkor brooded in the darkness at the outer reaches of Arda until an opportune moment arrived, when Tulkas was distracted. Their final gambit was a lone half-elf named Eärendil, who traveled to Valinor and requested the aid of the Valar. In earlier versions, Melkor's first reign ended after the Elves, the eldest of the Children of Ilúvatar, awoke at the shores of Cuiviénen, and the Valar resolved to rescue them from his malice. Their exact nature and manner of making the Silmarils were known only to Fëanor, and none other succeeded in making gems of comparable greatness and beauty. In the account published in The Silmarillion, Melkor had captured a number of Elves before the Valar attacked him, and he tortured and corrupted them, breeding the first Orcs. [T 18], Over time, Tolkien altered both the conception of this fallen Ainu and his name. [Morgoth gives his take on the protests at the US Capitol, the Big Tech clampdown on the internet for dissident speech, Covid, etc. This descension was inspired by being jealous of his Creator, Eru Ilúvatar's, Secret Fire, t… In the final battle, Melkor will be slain by either Túrin Turambar with his famous black sword or by Eönwë as mentioned in the Hiding of Valinor. Thus, the evil that Melkor weaves into the Music was mirrored in Eä by the evil he wove into the fabric of reality. The Valar exiled him permanently from the world, thrusting him through the Door of Night into the void, excluded from Arda until the prophesied Dagor Dagorath, when he would meet his final destruction. [3], John R. Holmes, writing in the J. R. R. Tolkien Encyclopedia, suggests that Melkor's nature resonates with John Milton's fallen angel in Paradise Lost. Early descriptions of morkoths were vague and suggested they were humanoid, but as these mysterious creatures got involved in the affairs of other races, a more accurate picture emerged. By the time Elves awoke in the world, Sauron had become Melkor's lieutenant and was given command over the new stronghold of Angband. Melkor's individual self was diminished as a consequence. There were so many posts that the creation of sub journals was necessary. It's strange that Sauron would become one of the most famous fictional villains in history when he was merely the servant of a far greater evil whose feats eclipsed those of his Ring-obsessed underling. According to the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull, he “sought to rule Eternia, and the universe itself".He sought more power than any mortal should. [T 14]. Ungoliant, a demon in spider form, helped Melkor destroy the Two Trees. Fëanor, son of Finwë, came upon his father’s corpse and cursed Melkor with the name Morgoth, “Dark Enemy." His power was so great that at first the Valar were unable to restrain him; he single-handedly contended with the collective might of all of the Valar. Fëanor thereupon named him Morgoth, "Black Foe of the World", and the Eldar knew him by this name alone afterwards. Melkor, dissatisfied that Eru had abandoned the Void, had sought to emulate his creator and fill the Void with sentient beings. According to later texts, the Dagor Dagorath would be the apocalyptic final battle against Morgoth, prophesied by Mandos. While Morgoth doesn't appear in The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, he plays a significant role in The Silmarillion and Tolkien's other writings, and his reign of terror had a far bigger impact on Middle-earth history than Sauron's. Originally known as Melkor, Morgoth is essentially the Lucifer of Tolkien's story. [T 6]:358 In earlier versions of Tolkien's legendarium the form of his name was Melko, simply meaning "Mighty One". Like the devil, Morgoth was one of the first children created by the God of Tolkien's world, but succumbed to jealousy and greed, especially over the creation of other races, and was duly disowned by … Over the next several decades, Morgoth destroyed the remaining Elven kingdoms, reducing their domain to an island in the Bay of Balar to which many refugees fled, and a small settlement at the Mouths of Sirion under the protection of Ulmo. In what he hoped would be an alternative expression of his own originality and creativity, he contended with Eru in the Music of the Ainur, introducing what he perceived to be themes of his own. The meaning of the name also varied, related in different times to milka ("greedy") or velka ("flame"). But his obsession to order gradually overshadowed his love for the other intelligent beings of Arda, who would ben… As described in the Ainulindalë, Melkor's discord marred the Music of the Ainur in Heaven. In battle, he wore black armour and wielded Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld. Most morkoths had a wide mouth with many sharp teeth visible even when the mouth was closed. From his Trolls to the Sun (which was made from the fruit of a Tree poisoned by Ungoliant, and was thus itself imperfect), Melkor's power and essence was poured into Arda. While not included in the published Silmarillion, other versions of the mythology hold that Melkor will escape the guardianship of Eärendil and return at the end of time. After centuries of war, Morgoth proved victorious, driving the elves to the brink of total destruction. [T 8], Since the Great Music of the Ainur stood as template for all of history and all of material creation in the Middle-earth cycle (it was first sung before Time, and then the universe was made in its image), the chaos introduced into the Music by Melkor's disharmonies was responsible for all evil in Arda, and everything in Middle-earth was tainted or "corrupted" by his influence. Character history. Once the greatest of the Valar, Melkor became the first Dark Lord. Morgoth took Jarvis Cocker's side over what he did to Michael Jackson at the BRIT Awards back in 1996. As revenge for his aid to Turgon and his defiance, Morgoth cursed Húrin and his children, binding Húrin to a seat upon Thangorodrim and forcing him to witness all that happened (using the long sight of Morgoth himself) to his children in the succeeding years. [T 1] He made a pretence of humility and virtue, but secretly plotted harm toward the Elves, whose awakening he blamed for his defeat. Before the Nírnaeth Arnoediad, the Man Beren and Elf Lúthien, the daughter of Thingol, entered Angband and recovered a Silmaril from Morgoth's crown after Luthien's singing sent him to sleep.
